Halloween Costumes: Tips on What to Wear

by Jayne Butler October 29, 2019 3 min read 1 Comment

With Halloween approaching, it is time to bust out your coolest, craziest costume for the year! Don’t have one prepped and ready to go? Feeling clueless on what to dress up as? We’ve Gaucho back:

“Spooky Vibes”

Have some random stuff at home but don’t know what you could be? I decided to combine what I had and just told everyone I was “Spooky Vibes” one year. The kicker? It was a hit!

What you need:

  • Vintage Neon Green Blazer: Swing by our shop for a selection of unique Drift Vintage blazers if you don't already have one.
  • Head Accessory:I wore a Spider Web Crown but Cat Ears, a Top Hat, or a Halloween Bandana would all be just as spooky.
  • Dark Makeup: This is where Pinterest is your best friend! Look up Halloween makeup inspo and get creative...I went with spider web eyeliner and black lipstick but there are also some spooky tutorials on Skeleton makeup, smokey Vampire looks, and more! For guys, this is one of the few times you can probably get away with that 5 o’clock shadow no matter what time it is and play it off as just being dead inside.

“VSCO Girl / VSCO Boy”

One of the biggest trends of 2019: the VSCO Girl/Boy! Personally, I think that us beachy students in IV started this trend years ago and the rest of the world finally just caught on.

What you need:

  • An Oversized Graphic Tee: I may be biased but I think our Big Wave Pigment Dyed Tee, UCSB Devereux Tee, and Sundowner Tee here at Island View Outfitters are as VCSO as it gets!
  • A Hydro Flask:Pretty much a UCSB essential; your hydro can double as the perfect accessory and keep you responsibly hydrated.
  • Scrunchies, Scrunchies and more Scrunchies!!

“Wild Thing”

Everyone knows how wild IV parties are, especially during past Halloweens, so become a wild thing. Party on party animals!

What you need:

  • Where The Wild Things Are Tee/Tank: The perfect shirt for Halloween in IV!
  • Animal Ears: Whether you opt for the classic cat ears or go for bunny ears instead, get wild with it! Sweet Jane in IV has a lot of accessories like these that will go great with your outfit.
  • Animal Print: Cheetah print pants will complete this look.

“Midterm Szn”

Be the buzzkill of the party and remind everyone that with Halloween Szn also comes Midterm Szn.

What you need:

  • UCSB Hoodie: Slept in the Lib in a hoodie and then wore it to your midterm the next day? We’ve all been there.
  • Scantrons or Blue Books: Easy DIY--just tape some scantrons all over your hoodie.
  • Yerba Mate:Bring a Yerb with you... also makes for a great chase.
  • Messy Hair: Don’t want to comb your hair? This may be the one occasion you can get away with it.

“Storke Tower”

Are you tall and iconic? Well, you know what else is tall and iconic? Storke Tower! Every year there is at least one person who dresses up as Storke Tower and it’s always a crowd favorite.

What you need:

  • Cardboard Box: Find a cardboard box that fits you from your chest to ankles length-wise.
  • Paint: Paint the cardboard beige and add some black details for the windows
  • Suspenders: Use suspenders or string to attach the cardboard box over your shoulders and you’re good to go!

Have a safe and SpoOky Halloween, Isla Vista, and look fabulous while celebrating!
